Questions and Answers

We understand that visiting a periodontal specialist can come with many questions. Our goal is to ensure you feel informed, comfortable, and confident in your care every step of the way. Here you will find answers to some of the most common questions we hear from our patients.

If your question is not answered here, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

General & Practice Questions

While many of our patients are referred by their general dentist, a referral is not required. If you have concerns about your gum health, dental implants, or any other issue you feel may require a specialist, you are welcome to contact our office directly to schedule a consultation.

Your first visit is a comprehensive evaluation with Dr. Garakani. It includes a review of your health history, a thorough oral exam, and advanced 3D imaging (CBCT scan) to get a precise look at your gums and jawbone. Most importantly, it is a dedicated time to discuss your concerns and goals so we can create a personalized treatment plan for you.

A board-certified periodontist has voluntarily completed a rigorous, multi-part examination process after their specialty training. This certification signifies the highest level of knowledge and clinical expertise in the field, demonstrating a commitment to the gold standard of patient care.

Yes, your comfort is our top priority. We use effective local anesthesia to ensure every procedure is painless. For patients with dental anxiety, we also offer sedation options that allow you to be in a completely relaxed and stress-free state throughout your visit.

We will work with you to help you understand and maximize your dental insurance benefits. For any out-of-pocket costs, we accept various payment methods and also partner with third-party financing companies like CareCredit to offer flexible payment plans. Our Patient Care Coordinator will discuss all options with you in detail.

Gum Disease & LANAP® Treatment

A regular cleaning is a preventive procedure that removes plaque from above the gum line. A "deep cleaning" (scaling and root planing) is a therapeutic treatment for active gum disease that goes below the gum line to remove the deep pockets of bacteria causing the infection.

Yes. Bleeding gums are a primary sign of active gum disease. While it may be painless at first, the infection can silently destroy the bone that supports your teeth, leading to tooth loss. Treating it early is the easiest and most effective way to protect your health.

LANAP® is an FDA-cleared laser procedure for treating gum disease. It uses a specific laser to remove bacteria and diseased tissue from the gum pocket without the need for scalpels or stitches, which often results in a more comfortable and faster recovery than traditional surgery.

LAPIP® is a similar laser protocol designed specifically to treat "peri-implantitis"—an infection around a dental implant. It is a highly effective, minimally invasive way to save a failing or ailing dental implant and protect your investment.

Dental Implants & Bone Grafting

A dental implant needs a strong foundation of bone to be successful long-term. If a tooth has been missing for a while, the jawbone shrinks. A bone graft rebuilds this area, ensuring you have enough healthy bone to securely support your implant for a lifetime.

Socket preservation is a bone graft performed at the same time a tooth is extracted. By immediately filling the empty socket, we prevent the rapid bone loss that normally occurs, creating the ideal site for a future dental implant.

Absolutely not. You will never leave our office without a beautiful smile. For full mouth cases, you will receive a high-quality, fixed set of temporary teeth on the same day as your implant procedure, which you will wear while your implants heal.

Caring for your new teeth is straightforward. You will brush them just like natural teeth and use special tools like a water flosser (e.g., Waterpik) to clean underneath. Regular professional check-ups are also essential for long-term health.

Surgical & Cosmetic Procedures

The initial recovery period usually lasts a few days, and we recommend planning for 24-48 hours of rest. You will need to stick to a soft food diet and follow aftercare instructions carefully to prevent complications. Most patients feel back to normal within a week.

The Pinhole® technique is a revolutionary, scalpel-free and suture-free method for treating gum recession. It uses a tiny entry point to gently reposition your existing gum tissue. This is much less invasive than a traditional graft, which typically involves taking tissue from the roof of your mouth and stitching it into place.

Yes. The goal of any cosmetic procedure, like a gum lift for a "gummy smile," is to create a result that looks completely natural and is in harmony with your facial features. Dr. Garakani combines surgical precision with an artistic eye to ensure your new gum line blends seamlessly with your smile.
